THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFICULT DECISIONS WE HAVE TO MAKE AS WE AGE.

From changing up your lifestyle to adjusting your living situation, it can be difficult and sometimes challenging to find the right fit for your circumstances.

And if you’re considering assisted living options in Scottsdale for yourself or someone you love, there are plenty of other things to keep in mind.

There are several options out there when it comes to senior-related support, and two of the most common ones are in-home care and assisted living. But what’s the difference between the two? And which one is right for your situation? Here’s what you need to know.

WHAT IS IN-HOME CARE?

In-home care is when you or your loved one remains in their primary residence and has a caregiver come to help them at home. This could mean that the caregiver comes throughout the day or even stays at the house. If you or someone you love needs help around the house but don’t want to move out of your home, this could be a great choice. And you can cater your in-home support based on your needs. In-home caregivers provide a multitude of services, including medication management, cleaning, grocery shopping, bathing and more. In-home care allows for a sense of independence and comfort and is an excellent way to ensure there’s help if and when you may need it.

WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING?

Some people confuse assisted living with in-home care, which is understandable; the names seem to imply a similar service. However, assisted living refers to those who move to a new facility that has 24-hour care available as well as medical support and additional staff members to provide support. And while you there may not have free reign of an entire home, assisted living often includes a private bedroom and bathroom. It’s worth considering this option if you or your loved one has more serious medical issues or needs help getting around the house. And while it may be hard to move into an assisted living facility, it often has more freedoms and support than people expect.

SHOULD I USE IN-HOME CARE OR ASSISTED LIVING?

There are several things to consider when deciding between in-home care and assisted living.

First, you’ll want to think about budget, since one service may be more expensive than the other. And while many insurance plans provide coverage options, there are some limitations to how much they can contribute.

Next, you’ll want to think about long-term care. If you or someone you care about requires ongoing support and likely will need it for some time, assisted living may be the better choice. However, if there’s less of an immediate need for readily available support, in-home care might work with your situation.

Lastly, think about the living environment and the person’s ability to maintain a healthy homestead. For example, if it’s too hard to keep up with chores and cleaning, assisted living will lessen the burden.

There are plenty of other factors that go into this decision, and choosing between assisted living and in-home care can feel overwhelming.
